PAMI electronic prescriptions: how to pick up medication at the pharmacy

PAMI electronic prescriptions expire 30 days after they are issued. What to bring to the pharmacy, how to check them, and how to plan the next prescription for a monthly treatment.

What an electronic prescription is

PAMI is the health insurer for retirees in Argentina. The doctor issues the prescription in PAMI's system, and the medication is picked up at the pharmacy with the member's details, without a paper prescription in most cases.

If you help a parent in Argentina from abroad, this is what the pharmacy will ask for. This guide summarizes what PAMI published as of October 5, 2026. Requirements may change: when in doubt, PAMI or the pharmacy is the reference.

How long it lasts

An electronic prescription expires 30 days after the date it was issued. If the doctor post-dated it, the 30 days count from the date shown as valid.

What to bring to the pharmacy

To pick up the medication, bring:

  • The national ID (DNI).
  • The PAMI membership card, in any of its current formats.

Medications that need something more

Some medications also require the prescription printed and signed by the doctor: cancer medications, antiretrovirals, psychotropic drugs and other special medications. Psychotropic drugs need a duplicate prescription, with requirements that vary by province: it is worth confirming them with the doctor when asking for the prescription.

How to check prescriptions

In the PAMI app, in the prescriptions section. Signing in uses the ID number, sex and the procedure number printed on the ID.

Long-term treatments: plan the next prescription

Since each prescription lasts 30 days, a treatment taken every month needs a new prescription every month. In a single appointment, the doctor can issue post-dated prescriptions for two or three consecutive months: it is worth asking.

It helps to note when each prescription expires and to ask for the next one before the medication runs out, especially if an appointment is needed.

If the prescription expires

An expired prescription is no longer valid: the doctor needs to issue a new one. In an urgent case, PAMI says you can book an appointment at a PAMI office so that one of its doctors transcribes the prescription.

If someone else goes to the pharmacy

If a relative or someone you trust is going to pick up the medication, check first with the pharmacy or with PAMI what they need to bring.

How Blist helps

Blist does not handle prescriptions and is not connected to PAMI. What it does is show how much of each medication is left, so you know in time when to ask for the next prescription.
